These are the results we got feedback from on various questions that were asked, they show a majority of a yes and no from the respondents personal opinion. For example we asked the question "do you think soul music is on the rise?" the response was 70% yes and 30% no, this shows the popularity of this genre of music which was unexpected in my opinion. Furthermore, another question that was asked was on our own music video was "do you think our idea is suited to this music video?" a majority of the people asked said yes which was great as w now know that it will be liked amongst most of the viewers. The overall feedback from the results given us depth of the likability of our idea as a whole, also with opinions on the music genre, style and whether they'd recommend it to a friend. This was the main aim for conducting these questions for a high quality quantitative data result.

UNIT 3 - Primary and Secondary research

Primary Research

Primary research is research done by yourself/ first person. This gives the person who is finding out information a clear understanding instead of getting information from someone else or another source. Primary research can include Questionnaires, surveys, interviews, forums, feedback and others. All of which obviously have advantages and disadvantages. An advantage for primary research, more specifically is a Questionnaire. Questionnaires are similar to surveys but with less detailed questions and more straight forward answers such as Yes/No,an advantage would be that it can be that its straight to the point and you can get a response from a wide range of people instead of relying on one individual. The feedback you get on a questionnaire could give results on a certain topic. However it can be very time consuming and if someone who wants to get through the questionnaire quickly may not answer honestly or even care. So finding an accurate answer from an individual would be hard as it takes up some time.

Furthermore, another example would be an Interview, this gives the interviewer (researcher) an answer first hand so the answer they get would probably be from someone who wants to give their opinion on something. Interviews can be a great way for a researcher to find out information as it allows them to ask questions as well as respond to feedback from the answers. I would say this is a direct form/source if information and the researcher can ask any question they want on any topic to the interviewee. It would be ideal for someone for example researching on how a film was made to go and interview the director of that film as they would be the one who know best out of everyone on set as they'd be the one who created and managed the production. A disadvantage to this is that it could lead to questions being from one representative so the answers could be biased/one sided. This would mean that the results found wont be as accurate as oppose to getting answers from a unbiased opinion. It would be more suitable to get results this way as the results are fair therefore increasing the reliability of your results.

Finally one last example of primary research would be Feedback from audiences who have just tested/seen/heard about your product or production, this would give a researcher a clear and immediate response. This would be ideal for someone to see if they need to change anything about their idea so they'd be able to improve it via this form of research. This from of research would be much easier say for example if a group of people were to get together to review the product/production they'd be able to give a direct response straight away as a group, this would save time instead of going around to each individual and asking them to see what they think. This method does have some disadvantages such as it cant be reliable 100% of the time as most people wouldn't want to give up their free time for a review, and if they do they may get annoyed or bored and answer half heatedly. Furthermore if someone was to go around and ask individuals to give their opinion then it could be very time consuming.

Secondary Research

Secondary research is research gathered from other sources, this can be done in many ways such as Getting information from a library, going on the internet, reading reviews, journals, archives and many more. This type of research can have the same outcome as primary but it is how the research is gathered that makes them different to each other, an example of secondary research would be through reading books at a library. This would be an advantage because the books can go into detail about a certain topic and give facts whereas trying to research it first hand wont be as accurate. In addition getting books from a library means that there is a wide variety of information available to the researcher at the time and they can find anything they want answers on and the library would be at no cost as you can borrow the book with a free library card. Although the library gives many options it is however very time consuming for someone actually go to a library and find the book and then read the information or check it out. So this form of secondary research is very informative but is also very time consuming.

Furthermore, another type of secondary research is the Internet and the millions of websites that is available there. This form of research has advantages as it is very easily accessible and any information that is wanted/needed can be easily found by searching in relevance to the topic. This could lead someone to go to websites that give reviews or they could go to an official website and see what kind of information that gives off. Also it is very easily accessible so someone could try and find this information wherever they are. The information given off on the internet however cannot be very reliable depending on the website so that would be a huge disadvantage for this form of research. Anyone could write a review on a website be it a fan or someone who has different views, this does not give reliable results and could affect the research that is being done. In addition to that the internet can have different websites giving off different information on the same topic, this shows that there are different views so finding an unbiased opinion would be vital to getting the right information.

Finally someone could find secondary information via Ratings, this form of information gives off peoples ratings for many different topics, for example for a film people could leave reviews on how good they found it or how much they didn't like it. An advantage of this would be that you wouldn't have to go and do the primary research yourself you could just see someones review on it and base a decision off of that. It is fairly quick to find the reviews as they can be either on the internet, newspaper and other sources. They are very easily accessible and have many different views from many people. However a disadvantage to this would be that the reviews can be from someone biased so it cannot be 100% reliable. Since the reviews are opinion based then someones opinion can be completely different to your own so this would be a problem when basing a decision off of this. It is better to find a professional review as they are more trustworthy and reliable.

UNIT 3 - Purpose of research

Task 1

The purpose of this research is to find a specific target audience for our product which you are producing. The research method you could use would be a Focus Group, this would come under Primary research, this is a small group of people who give their opinions and preferences on certain things. It gives the product developers some form of idea of what they should include in their product in order for it to be appealing to the audiences so it can have a higher chance of success. By looking into forums it allows me to see what people who are interested in thats specific genre are more common to like. Another way of research would be through Demographics, this is used to find out your target audience through their location, this can be found through secondary research on the internet, since we are in London which is very populated and big it would be hard to get an accurate reading/result, government data would be highly reliable in this case.

Another way to find out if your product would appeal to audiences could be through a questionnaire, this would come under primary research and this can be both open and closed questions. Open being more to the qualitative side of results and closed being more quantitative. An example of an open question could be "Why is this genre more appealing to you?" and an example of a closed would be "do you like the Hip-Hop genre?". This gives us a more accurate reading as both of these types of research gives us a persons opinion to see if they will enjoy our product. The secondary research I could do is to look into existing songs relatable to the genre of our music video so we'd be able to apply the results to our own. I could look into how successful a rap song was by looking at comments on Youtube or at online forums or even possibly reviews of the song itself. This gives me an idea to base and shape our own music video off of the one we had researched so it can have a higher chance of being successful. this can be through certain lighting seen in the video or how the editing was done to create the same effect.

Furthermore, I can conduct interviews for primary research. I can do these interview who are fans of the genre so they'd have more of a knowledgable opinion compared to someone who doesn't know anything about the genre. I'd ask them qualitative questions so they will explain the reason for their liking towards the music, It can give us a more detailed answer to rely on. I would also ask what conventions in said genre makes it successful so I would be able to add those same conventions into my music video. An example question in the interview would be "what pleasures you most through this type of genre of music?" (more specifically rap). Also by looking at other music videos that have done well i could use the same structure that they had sued and implement it into my own. However a down side of this is that it could leave me with a limitation of creativity, if i were to try and put my own twist on the usual conventions of rap music it may not receive the same reception as it would have if it went along the lines of other rap videos that received a good reaction. This could lead my audience not to like the music video.

UNIT 3 - Qualitive and Quantitative research

Qualitative and Quantitative research

There are two types of research that can be used to find out information on various stats, figures and opinions on a product or just to generally get an idea of something you wish to invest production in, this can be separated into Quantitative and Qualitative.

Image result for quantitative researchQuantitative research is information shown via stats and figures, so for example this can be shown via percentage or amount of money made, someone would use this form of research to find any information that may be numerical to show a broad overall look on a topic. This can show the success rate of a product and enables researchers to gain some form of knowledge on that basis. For example if someone wanted to research into how successful a film was then they would check the amount of money it had made at Box Office. If the rates and figures are high then the film would most likely be a success.

Quantitative research gives researchers a better understanding in to what a specific audience may enjoy/find appealing, so if someone else was to try and find out an idea to put out then quantitative research would show the figures and numerical information on a product or idea similar to theirs. This gives an insight as to whether it will be successful or not. This form of research can also show what is popular so someone could base their idea off of that. Furthermore this also shows audience preferences compared to a rival product so the researcher can make a decision or have an understanding off of that basis. For example at Box office the movie 'Suicide Squad had made 745.6 million USD - Google, this can represent the amount of people that wanted to go to watch the film and actually paid to view it, from that impressive amount a movie producer may want to think about making a movie similar to this as the amount of money made from it was very high. Also the film was Number 1 ranked in 4,255 theatres with an estimated average of making $31,418 - Box Office MoJo.

However although this type of research is seen to be detailed and helpful there are some disadvantages. One of which would be that the stats and figures may not always be accurate and reliable for that matter. So someone would probably not get accurate results therefore cannot base their product off of those results and in turn may get a response/feedback the complete opposite of what they initially thought and read. In addition, in the example of an institution trying to find a specific audience based on age and gender, some figures only show amounts and do not go into detail on more specifically who and what. So the audience information is often missed out so there would be no ideal way of targeting an audience. Quantitative research does not go into the the opinions so therefore the "detailed" aspect of the results aren't reliable. Which can cause a incorrect or inaccurate answer for results/data.

Qualitative

Qualitative research is information which is more to do with reviews and facts instead of stats and figures. Qualitative research goes more into detail on audience opinion rather than the amount in number form. Qualitative Research is also used to uncover trends in thought and opinions, and dive deeper into the problem. This dwells deeper into the opinions of people rather than getting percentage amounts of who likes what for example. This can determine what people look for when buying a certain product. As an example if someone were to be doing some research and they want to find out whether someone likes or dislikes their product they'd then ask why which leads the interviewee to give an opinion based question. This would enable a flexible discourse.

Image result for questionnaire
Qualitative data gives researchers the chance to see what the people think of their product or a product, this an determine the changes made to said product or what they could do better in the form of improvements. This is beneficial to business owners as it improves their product for it to be more appealing to their target audience. Qualitative research can come in the form of interviews with certain people to get a review. for example when the new Iphone 7 came out apple had conducted surveys for customers who had bought the new tech. Many had complained about some of the new features on the Iphone such as it having no headphone jack and it requiring for the owner of the phone to buy separate wireless headphones which would cost an additional £150. This led to many bad reviews however due to Apples success with their previous models the sales were still moderately good as they are one of the worlds largest phone/technology brand.

There are some cons to this form of research. Just like quantitative research this is very time consuming as getting everyone within the surveys opinion would be lengthy and would take some thinking for the interview. The interviewee may not want to take some time to answer these questions and if they do there would be the chance of them "winging" some of the questions given. This form of data research is very effective but just like quantitative it has its cons in terms of time consumption. Both however are reliable for a thesis. This data is highly effective and can help[ business get an opinion orientated answer giving them more detail to work with when marketing off their product/production.
