UNIT 3 - Purpose of research

Task 1

The purpose of this research is to find a specific target audience for our product which you are producing. The research method you could use would be a Focus Group, this would come under Primary research, this is a small group of people who give their opinions and preferences on certain things. It gives the product developers some form of idea of what they should include in their product in order for it to be appealing to the audiences so it can have a higher chance of success. By looking into forums it allows me to see what people who are interested in thats specific genre are more common to like. Another way of research would be through Demographics, this is used to find out your target audience through their location, this can be found through secondary research on the internet, since we are in London which is very populated and big it would be hard to get an accurate reading/result, government data would be highly reliable in this case.

Another way to find out if your product would appeal to audiences could be through a questionnaire, this would come under primary research and this can be both open and closed questions. Open being more to the qualitative side of results and closed being more quantitative. An example of an open question could be "Why is this genre more appealing to you?" and an example of a closed would be "do you like the Hip-Hop genre?". This gives us a more accurate reading as both of these types of research gives us a persons opinion to see if they will enjoy our product. The secondary research I could do is to look into existing songs relatable to the genre of our music video so we'd be able to apply the results to our own. I could look into how successful a rap song was by looking at comments on Youtube or at online forums or even possibly reviews of the song itself. This gives me an idea to base and shape our own music video off of the one we had researched so it can have a higher chance of being successful. this can be through certain lighting seen in the video or how the editing was done to create the same effect. 

Furthermore, I can conduct interviews for primary research. I can do these interview who are fans of the genre so they'd have more of a knowledgable opinion compared to someone who doesn't know anything about the genre. I'd ask them qualitative questions so they will explain the reason for their liking towards the music, It can give us a more detailed answer to rely on. I would also ask what conventions in said genre makes it successful so I would be able to add those same conventions into my music video. An example question in the interview would be "what pleasures you most through this type of genre of music?" (more specifically rap). Also by looking at other music videos that have done well i could use the same structure that they had sued and implement it into my own. However a down side of this is that it could leave me with a limitation of creativity, if i were to try and put my own twist on the usual conventions of rap music it may not receive the same reception as it would have if it went along the lines of other rap videos that received a good reaction. This could lead my audience not to like the music video.
